Citrus Cinnamon Rolls

Happy Wednesday! Winter has definitely hit Sacramento!! The past two days has been very cold and I am craving hot food.

On this cold day this recipe goes great with a hot cup of coffee or even Hot apple cider.

Citrus Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

Serves: 12
Prep Time: 3 hours
Cook Time: 3o min

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup of lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp of fresh orange zest
  • 1/2 cup of fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar or honey
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter at room temp
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract

Filling:

  • 1/2 cup of sugar (I used demarra sugar)
  • 4 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

Glaze:

  • 1 cup of confectioners sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of orange juice
  • 2 tsp of fresh lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Dissolve the yeast in 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. Make sure to blend the yeast into the water.
  2. Add in the orange juice, zest, sugar, salt, egg, butter, and 1 1/2 cup of flour.
  3. In a mixer beat all the ingredients together.
  4. Add in the remaining flour and mix.
  5. Your dough should spring back when you touch it, and not be sticky.
  6. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes.
  7. Remove the dough from the bowl and lightly oil the bowl.
  8. Form the dough into a ball and place in bowl.
  9. Cover the dough and let sit for about 1 1/2 hours.
  10. Line the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  11. Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll the dough into a 15 x 9 rectangle.

To prepare the filling:

  1. In a small bowl mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and butter.
  2. With a spatula, spread the sugar cinnamon mixture onto the dough.
  3. Tightly roll up the dough into a log, rolling from the long side, making sure to pinch the seam closed.
  4. To cut the cinnamon rolls, use dental floss. I know this seems funny but it really works!!
  5. Cut each roll into I inch thick pieces and arrange them in a prepared baking pan.
  6. Cover the rolls and let them rise in a warm place.
  7. Let the rolls rise for about 1 hour.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees or 190 Celsius.
  9. Bake the rolls for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Cool the rolls on a wire rack or baking rack.

For the glaze:

  1. In a small bowl combine the glaze ingredients together and drizzle over the rolls.
  2. Tips:
  3. Adding Nutella to the top of these rolls is an amazing treat! You can also sprinkle fresh chopped almonds over the top.
  4. Drizzle fresh honey over the rolls along with a sprinkle of fresh almonds.

  1. The weather is definitely changing. It’s actually quite cold and windy this week in Los Angeles! These cinnamon rolls look so delicious! What a great idea adding citrus flavors to it–I will have to try this the next time I make cinnamon rolls 🙂

    • Hi Ada,
I had no idea you were in my state!! Woo hoo. Except we are like 5 1/2 to 6 hours apart lol. Have you been to Sacramento? It’s quite boring here, I prefer so cal. Especially San Diego or OC. 🙂
Yes please try these, and maybe you can be a part of my holiday magazine? Check out the post “Lending A Hand.” Let me know what you think? 🙂

      • I’ve never been to Sacramento! The furthest north I’ve traveled to in California is San Francisco. San Diego is nice and relaxing 🙂
Will definitely try these cinnamon rolls soon! Heading over to your other post now 🙂

      • Ohh I love San Francisco. I use to go to SF literally 3 times a week, to just hang out with friends and do hair for some of my hair clients. 🙂 I miss that city. If you ever come to Sacramento, I will show you around. 🙂
