Greek Infused Mastic Coffee Recipe
Servings: 1
Ingredients:
- 1 Briki
- 2 teaspoons of Greek coffee
- 2 teaspoons of powdered sugar + 4 mastic crystals
- Cold water
- 1 demitasse cup
- Coffee grinder
Method:
Let me start by saying mastic is not easy to use when trying to blend into coffee or teas. You will notice that mastic has a sticky residue when trying to grind it into a fine powder. Why do you ask? Mastic is a resin obtained from the mastic trees. Many years ago mastic was used for medical reasons especially to help with toothache problems. Greeks would use mastic as gum and chew on the resin to help aid tooth or stomach problems. Nowadays you will find mastic gum, as well as many different mastic candies around Greece.
**Please carefully read how to fine grind the mastic otherwise you will ruin your briki and I really don’t want that to happen.
- In a coffee grinder, add the powdered sugar and the mastic crystals and blend until smooth. The mastic should be finely grounded in the sugar. It is up to you if you want to add more sugar to your briki. I like mine “metrios” which is medium sweet so I don’t add any more sugar.
- Fill your demitasse cup with filtered cold water. I like to add about a cup and a half to make a little bit extra.
- Add 2 teaspoons of the Greek coffee and your mastic sugar mix to the briki and water.
- Place briki directly over medium heat and gently stir to incorporate the coffee grounds. I use a gas stove so this method will cut your time in half.
- The coffee will heat quite quickly so make sure you have a kitchen mitt handy to hold on to the handle once the foam reaches the top. (If you don’t keep an eye on the coffee, it can boil over and you will have a hot mess.)
- Once the foam has formed, remove the briki from the heat and then pour into demitasse cup. Enjoy!
**The mastic flavor is really nice in the Greek coffee. You can always replace the mastic flavor with cardamom spice too.
Kali Orexi!
I’ve had mastic ice cream, but didn’t know you can also add it to coffee. So interesting. 🙂
