Heart-Shaped Pita Bread Recipe

(Adapted from my original Kouzounas Kitchen recipe)

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (not too warm)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of semolina (reserve more for dusting)
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter ( see my Amazon shop here)
  • Rolling pin

Method:

  1. Place the yeast, honey, and warm water in a bowl of a stand mixer and mix slightly. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until light and bubbly.
  2. Once the mixture is foamy, add the flour, olive oil, and salt. Mix while using the dough hook attachment. Mix for about 7-8 minutes until the dough is smooth. You can also make this by hand.
  3. Place dough inside a lightly greased bowl, and cover it with plastic wrap. Let the double in size in a warm place in your kitchen.
  4. Place dough on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Gently roll out the dough into about a medium-sized rectangle and lightly dust flour over the top.
  6. Take your heart-shaped cookie cutter, and cut out about 12-15 pieces. Reuse the extra dough and make more pita if you can.
  7. Place the heart-shaped pitas onto a baking sheet, and cover it with plastic wrap.
  8. Let the pita rise for about 10 minutes or until puffy.
  9. Get a skillet out, and place over medium heat. Drizzle a few teaspoons of olive oil in the pan, and then place 4-5 pitas inside. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side until you see them puff up and lightly golden brown. Remove from the heat and then let cool. Repeat until all the pitas are cooked.
  10. Place pita in a pan and cook until golden and puffy on each side. You can brush the marinate over the bread while it is cooking for extra flavor!
  11. Remove from the pan and enjoy. Store the pita inside a sealed container.

Notes:

  • Make sure your yeast mixture is bubbly and that is has created a foam over the top. See the photo above.
  • Spraying a light oil over the plastic wrap before covering the pita dough is ideal so your plastic doesn’t stick to the dough.
