Let’s get to the recipe!!

Apple Crisp with Pecan Brown Sugar Topping Recipe

Servings: 4-5

Ingredients:

The filling:

  • 2 pounds of green apples peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch slices
  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons of ginger
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla flavoring
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder

    The topping:

  • 1 cup of walnuts or pecans (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons of cold butter (unsalted)
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger
  • Pinch of salt

Prepare the filling:

In a large cast iron pan melt the butter over medium heat. Add in the brown sugar, cinnamon,  ginger, flour, lemon, vanilla, and salt. Stir to combine then add the apples. Cook the mixture for about 4 minutes over medium heat. Then remove from heat.

Prepare the topping:

In a food processor or blender combine the pecans or walnuts with sugar, butter, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and flour.

Pulse the ingredients until they come together. Should resemble a thick coarse mixture.

To assemble this dessert:

Lightly grease the cast iron pan and then evenly spread out the apple mixture. Add the topping evenly over the apple mixture, and then bake in the middle rack of the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool before serving.

Really good to pair with Greek yogurt or vanilla ice cream.
