Greek Independence Day

Happy Greek Independence Day!!

In today’s post, we are talking about Orthodox Lent, Kouzounas Kitchen recipes, and Greek Independence Day!

Fasting

Orthodox lent started on March 3rd, 2025. Everyone will do their fast differently including me. Although, many Orthodox people will do a strict fast including the removal of meat, fish, dairy products, wine, olive oil, and eggs. Now in saying that we will not fast from olive oil, eggs, and dairy products. I have health issues that I have been dealing with and I removed gluten for about a year now. So far, I’m feeling better thankfully but I still need certain ingredients for myself. Although we will include ingredients that some of you may not include in your fast, I will include helpful tips and tricks to replace those ingredients. Please be kind to everyone during the fast and don’t judge!

Greek Independence Day

March 25th, 2025 we are celebrating Greek Independence Day! Celebrating the independence from the Ottoman Turkish rule in 1821. I need to include some key notes about this day. Although many celebrate on the 25th the Maniates “where my family comes from” say Independence Day started on March 17th in Mani. This is the date the Maniates declared war on the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire tried so hard to overtake the Maniates, but thankfully they couldn’t. Mani is a rugged mountainous region, making it the ideal place to start the Greek revolution. So, I give thanks to my grandparents who fought in the wars and to all the Maniates. I guess it is true that the Maniates are descendants of the Spartans, as my father loves to tell me. Strong-willed people who didn’t want their villages to be overtaken by the Ottomans.
