Saturday’s Food For Thought

Garlic is our topic today!!

Yes, I had to choose the one ingredient that leaves your breath smelly. 🙂

You already know that garlic adds something special to our recipes and is very valuable and versatile to everyone. Did you know that garlic comes from the Allium family of vegetables, which includes chives, onions, leeks and shallots.

So you are probably asking, what else does garlic do for us, besides taste good in our meals?!

The benefits of garlic-

Garlic helps to promote the well being of the heart and the immune system. The active component in garlic is the sulfur compound called allicin. Allicin is the chemical being produced when you chop, mash, mince, chew or bruise the garlic. Allicin is quite powerful as an antibiotic and works to prevent the body to inhibit the ability of germs to grow or reproduce. Their has been over 10 studies in the world that state that garlic can reduce cholesterol.

Garlic has germanium in it. Germanium is a anti- cancer agent, and garlic has more of this then any other herb. Another benefit of garlic is to help regulate the body’s blood pressure. So whether you are having issues with high or low blood pressure, garlic can help with this.

Cooking with Garlic-

I almost use garlic on a every day basis in my cooking. We Greeks love Garlic!!!! Tzatziki, scordalia, and many other plates, have a good amount of garlic in it. Garlic has a long history as a culinary spice that is mixed with other herbs like ginger and onion to prepare dishes. Depending on how you use the garlic, the method of cooking it can either give you a strong flavor or more mellow one. Why not try some roasted garlic tonight with dinner?
